Desire is Never Enough
"If you can believe it and conceive it you can achieve it" is
one of the most misunderstood motivational quotes of all
time. People tend to see "will" rather than "can" and believe
that it they repeat enough affirmations, write enough goals,
and maintain a positive attitude that the universe will
magically drop their boldest dreams at their feet.

Consider the many things in your life have you desired but failed to achieve:
learning a foreign language, owning a certain type of vehicle, home, watch;
writing a book, becoming an actor, learning to fly an airplane, traveling around
the world, holding public office, starting or owning a business and the list
could go on for paragraphs. Why don't people achieve what they believe and
conceive? Here are several possibilities:

    1.  Lack of focus. You got sidetracked by too many other "good" things and
    never reached your "great" thing.

    2.  Lack of discipline. You failed to develop the discipline necessary to close
the gap between where you are and where you wanted to go.

    3.  Lack of consistency. You developed a degree of discipline and did the
right things every once-in-awhile, but never with enough consistency to
separate yourself from the status quo.

    4.  Fear. You feared rejection, looking foolish, or failure.

    5.  You overestimated the product but underestimated the process. It
was flat out tougher than you thought it would be so you went on to something
else when you decided you weren't willing to pay the price necessary to earn
    the prize.

    6.  You became successful. You reached the top of a mountain and built a
retirement home there rather than seeking out a higher mountain. Being good
got in the way of greatness.

    7.  You waited for the perfect time to begin. You studied the race but
never joined it. You discussed but never decided. You stuck your toes in but
never took the plunge. While you procrastinated, the opportunity, and life,
    passed you by.

    8.  You didn't have the talent. You moved in the direction of your dreams, only to discover that your talent
didn't match your aspirations. Wisely, you decided to pursue the gifts you had, rather than chase the talents
    you wanted.

Don't mistake the theme of this article: desire is important in reaching greatness in any endeavor. But it is never
enough. Without the focus, discipline consistency, courage, tenacity, drive, urgency and talent to help you bridge the
gap between where you are and your desired destination, your dreams can become hallucinations. Which of the
eight factors listed must you address in order to convert your desires into reality? Leverage and maximize your
desire by applying the missing ingredients now!
